Spring Cottage

Brimming with character and comfort, Spring Cottage makes the perfect base for breaks throughout the year. Walk over stepping stones to a low doorway and into a sunny, beamed open-plan sitting room with homemade teatime treats, local apple juice and a welcome tray with fresh flowers and free-range eggs waiting for you.

There’s a wood burner set back into a huge inglenook fireplace, cheery rugs and cushions, a deep leather sofa and squishy armchair, books, maps, magazines, CDs, DVDs and board/card games. Up steep winding stairs is a surprisingly large and light bedroom with curved beams, a super big wooden bed, a sparkling bathroom with a roll top bath and a large walk-in shower.

Spring Cottage provides the perfect base to help you relax and recharge, whether you are planning exhilarating walks over Dartmoor or the South West Coast Path, fishing the Tamar for salmon or trout or cycling through the villages and hamlets that make up this tranquil part of the county. Or simply unwinding with a glass of wine by the pond, a steaming hot chocolate by a winter log fire or soaking by candlelight in a roll-top bath?

Beautifully and comfortably furnished, you’ll have a good slice of south-facing garden which in springtime becomes a profusion of colour with snowdrops followed by primroses, camellias, daffodils and bluebells. Later on azaleas, rhododendron, foxgloves, ox-eye daisies, pink campion and elderflowers attract bees, butterflies and pollinating insects. The occasional damselfly or dragon fly will flit over the pond. There’s bird life aplenty, comfortable garden furniture for relaxing, the trickle of water into the pond and the occasional wandering hen.

Spring Cottage is available for flexible breaks throughout the year, with a minimum stay of 3 nights so you can choose arrival and departure dates to fit in with your holiday plans. Travelling midweek should avoid the worst of the high season traffic and the Monday-to-Thursday rate is usually more attractive.

Occupancy is restricted to 2 adults plus one child (maximum age 2 years, there is no extra charge for travel cot, highchair and safety gate). Please note however that there are steep stairs, also a pond and spring-fed stream in the garden so toddlers must be supervised at all times.

Find time to forage the spring hedgerows for the first leaves of wild garlic – great in a stir fry – or find a bank of summer-warmed blackberries. Everything is provided for you, all you have to budget for are meals and days out. A tonic for tired city workers or the perfect hide-away for lovers.

Our friendly and characterful pub, The Royal Inn at Horsebridge, is just a few minutes away by car and serves local ales and a hearty, locally-sourced menu. Venturing a little further afield you are spoilt with National Trust properties, open gardens, farm shops, craft galleries, excellent restaurants, fabulous walks and numerous activities all within half an hour’s drive.

The ancient Stannary and market town of Tavistock is 20 minutes away while the historic Ocean City of Plymouth is little more than 35 minutes by car; the far west of Cornwall is around 90 minutes away, while rugged north Devon and its gentler south Devon coastline are around an hour.
